The Field Lab analyzes, assesses, and develops solutions for climate change. This includes original research ranging from renewable energy, natural climate solutions, and bioenergy to vulnerability, impacts, and responses to climate change. The lab has also been active in climate assessments such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for decades.
Preparation, response, and recovery to environmental risk are core responsibilities of individuals and societies. Projects in the lab explore options for environmental risk reduction using methods from surveys to AI to air and water quality measurements. We quantify risk factors and test possible responses for a wide-range of environmental risks, especially wildfire and coastal flooding.
Perturbations of the global carbon cycle can exacerbate or mitigate global climate change. We use multiple approaches to understand how climate, emissions, and disturbance affect the global cycling of carbon in the past, present, and future.
We use field, lab, and model experiments to understand fundamental ecosystem processes such as biogeochemical cycling, energy flows, and community dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems.
